Association of Traffic-Related Air Pollution Exposure and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes

Abstract:
Increasing evidence suggests air pollution adversely affects pregnancy outcomes.  But not many studies have examined how traffic-generated emissions affect birth outcomes.  Little information is known on the impact of the pollution exposure on pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia.  This seminar will present a brief review of the current research of air pollution and adverse pregnancy outcomes, and will focus on previous and on-going studies in southern California and one study in China that examined traffic-related air pollution and pregnancy outcomes including preterm birth, term low birth weight,  preeclampsia, and missed abortion.  Methodological issues in this area of research will be discussed.
