Distinguished Professor of electrical engineering and computer science Jean-Luc Gaudiot

Feb. 23, 2026 - Jean-Luc Gaudiot, UC Irvine Distinguished Professor of electrical engineering and computer science, was honored with the Richard E. Merwin Award for Distinguished Service from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society. Named after Merwin, a pioneer in the field of digital computer engineering, the service award recognizes those who contribute outstanding service to the profession, the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society.

Gaudiot has served on numerous committees including the IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Architecture, the IEEE Computer Society Publications Board Transactions Operations Committee, the IEEE Computer Society Publications Board Magazines Operations Committee and more. He spent years with the Computer Society and served as vice president of the publications board from 2014-2015. In 2017, he was named IEEE Computer Society president.

“It feels at the same time deeply affirming, incredibly meaningful and quite humbling as I gratefully reflect on my past mentors, collaborators and students who made the work rewarding,” Gaudiot said of his recent award. “I feel thankful to be able to contribute to a field and community that I care about so much.”

Gaudiot has been on the UCI electrical engineering and computer science faculty since 2002, serving as the department chair between 2003 to 2009. He is the director of UCI’s Parallel Systems & Computer Architecture Lab (PASCAL), which focuses on computer architecture, parallel systems and compiler techniques. His research encompasses computer architecture, hardware security, parallel and distributed processing, reconfigurable architectures and autonomous driving systems, with nearly 300 publications.

The prestigious Richard E. Merwin Award is the Computer Society's highest level volunteer service award. Gaudiot will receive $5,000 and a bronze medal. Details for the November award ceremony will be announced next month.
