Adeola Adekoba Wins ASEE PSW Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award

Adeola Adekoba

April 15, 2026 – Fourth-year biomedical engineering student Adeola Adekoba was recognized with the Outstanding Undergraduate Student award by the American Society for Engineering Education - Pacific Southwest Section. He will receive this award at the ASEE Zone IV Conference at Cal Poly Pomona University on April 16-18.

The award recognizes undergraduate engineering students who show high achievements in design projects, research and community service. Adekoba was named due to his work in engineering education research for improving laboratory modules and his achievements in design projects, among other accomplishments.

Under the guidance of Christine King, associate professor of teaching in biomedical engineering, Adekoba and fellow undergraduate students Amrita Kaur Bedi and Yaseen Aldawood will present their research titled  “Industry-Driven Laboratory Module Using Laparoscopic Trainers for Undergraduate Biomedical Engineering Education” at the conference.

Their paper refers to the team’s research that provided a real-world experience for students interested in working in the medical field. They developed a laparoscopic training module that introduces industry devices to the BME curriculum, allowing students to think about safety, human factors and regulatory standards while designing and running experiments.

Adekoba said being acknowledged feels great. “It made me feel like all my hard work this year was getting recognized and I felt very accomplished. [I would like to shoutout] my partners, Yaseen and Amrita as well as Professor King for making this possible. This achievement is helping me reach the goal of graduating with accolades as well as making a direct impact on future biomedical engineering students.”
